I’d still see it, but not as often.īut, on this strange day when I ran across it in the library, I chose to bring it home with me. By this point, the hype had died down, and the book was resigned to merely appearing on “Best of the Year” book lists or “Asian Women in Translation” lists. I remembered it’s title because it had literally been everywhere. I’m very picky about my book covers, but that’s another story.Īnd so, one day when I was wandering the library pre-pandemic, I found this book nestled in the fiction section. I didn’t originally get it, because I thought the cover was honestly terrible and unappealing. ![]() ![]() Every single time I opened up my bot Instagram, whenever I opened BookTube, and whenever I browsed the Asian literature in translation hashtags, every single person was literally talking about Convenience Store Woman. Everyone had been talking about this book for months. ![]()

Regardless, you will certainly have fun on the journey (and with the romance!). The book, by the British-born writer and film critic Tom Shone, is every bit as intricately jiggered as one of Nolan’s projects a kind of ongoing, genially competitive, intellectually. Will Nora find love at last in the arms of a small-town doctor/farmer/innkeeper or maybe someone else? I think you know the answer to that. And as a literary agent, she should know: "When books are your life - in my case, your job - you get pretty good at guessing where a story is going."īut sister Libby is hoping to change Nora's story, make her the heroine of her own romance, and insists on the two of them vacationing in Sunshine Falls, N.C., the place that inspired a bestseller called "Once in a Lifetime," a small-town love story, typical of what's on the Hallmark Channel. ![]() Henry has a great deal of fun playing with romance's tropes and plot twists but especially so with main character Nora Stephens, who claims to be the archetype who never gets the guy, who is too involved with her career to care. When the action finally started it was good, but hardly worth the wait. It plods along until the last few chapters when everything starts to happen. The story of the vampire hunters served no purpose except to introduce a few incidental characters. Much of the first half of the book was a waste of time. I read this book partly in the hope of recapturing some of that old Niven magic, but no matter how much I wanted it, it was not there. A group of Protectors - the original alien builders of the ring - are engaged in a war that could result in the destruction of everything. Something strange is happening on the edge of the ring. Then Wu is contacted by the alien puppeteer, the Hindmost. A coalition of hominid subspecies have banded together to rid the ring of a plague of vampires. In the previous novel, The Ringworld Engineers, Louis Wu and his crew of aliens saved Ringworld from destruction, leaving them stranded on the ring with little hope of rescue.įourteen years later, Louis Wu is living the life of an itinerant teacher. ![]() ![]() ![]() Terraform the inside and you have an artefact with a habitable surface 3 million times that of Earth.
